Facing San Pablo Bay on the eastern side of San Rafael, China Camp State Park is named for a former shrimping village and its inhabitants, many of whom were Chinese immigrants. There is a small history museum at the beach where the village once was and abundant hiking and biking on the many trails. John C. Fremont used the mission as his headquarters during the Bear Flag Revolt of 1846 during the Mexican-American War.
